High Resolution Art - From past to present
written by Kyo[Acid/Fire] (12/28/1997)

The medium known as High Resolution Art, or Hirez for short has been a slowly gaining art form since the beginning of the scene. Hirez as an art form hasn't been around forever, but it was started in the old Amiga days, when demo scene members drew pixel by pixel on their am500's. It hadn't yet touched the art scene as we know it, of course the art scene hadn't been around back in the "good 'ol days." That is until one member of the scene popped up, his name was Cat Spencer a.k.a. Catbones [phatboner ;)] he probably revolutionized the Hirez medium, his combination tattoo/Photoshop skills created the best pictures anyone had ever seen.

Since then, many new Photoshop whizzes have come and gone, Visigoth, Borian to name a few. There is also Wildcat, Fathom, and Tomppa, some of the newer Hirez members. I have mentioned mainly freehand hirez artists, because I'm biased towards "freehanders."

Now what is freehand you ask? Well, the main format of high resolution artwork is split into 3 categories, Freehand, 3D Rendering, and Photo Manipulation. Freehand is the technique of using usually the airbrush tool, or paintbrush tool in photoshop, and "freehanding" using either the mouse, or a Wacom tablet, creating your own light, shadows and basically making every aspect of the picture. 3D Rendering, I see as some what cheating, you basically create a wire frame of an object, insert light coordinates and surface skins, and with the click of a button your entire image is computer drawn for you. Now I have seen some amazing stuff rendered before but the drawbacks of Freehand vs. 3D Rendering is that when you draw something freehand, anything can happen, stuff you haven't imagined could 'accidentally' appear, and I think it takes more talent and skill to draw in every single aspect of light and shadow. 3D Rendering is completely pre-laid out for you, nothing 'spontaneous' happens, it all appears according to the computers calculations. Last but not least is photo manipulation, its the act of taking photo's and manipulating them in a way, creating a collage of filters, photo's, layers and light.

Hi-resolution today isn't as looked down upon as it was 4 years ago, but it still isn't seen as a "real" form of computer art, for example, people deleting the *.jpg out of packs in order to "just see the ANSI." I think that's bullshit. Today there is also a channel #hirez which hosts some of the most talented hirez artists of the scene today. It has become a place where some of the more intimidating members of Acid, Ice and Fire can converse at ease with some of the smaller groups out there. A place to "kick back, relax and take your shoes off" Sometimes even a non-hirez member comes wandering in, and we welcome them with open arms. So check out #hirez, and see where the future of high resolution art has brought us.
